Reserves are champions

FC United’s Reserve Team became champions in their first ever season by edging past second placed Padiham Reserves on Saturday at their home ground of Abbey Hey’s Abbey Stadium.

A solitary goal just after the hour from Martin Cosgrave was enough to seal the title with three games remaining to cap what has been an outstanding inaugural season for Tony Cullen’s team, who are largely made up of under-21s.

Tony said: "To win the title in their first season is fantastic and they’ve thoroughly deserved it. I couldn’t have asked for a better set of youngsters, they’ve given me 100% week-in, week-out."

Enquiries are currently being made to find a new league for the newly crowned champions to test themselves in next year as there is no reserves league operated by the Unibond.

Everyone at the club is now hoping that the first team can follow the Reserves’ lead and be crowned champions with three games to go by beating Atherton LR on Wednesday night at Gigg Lane.
