Two each for Jess & Jess for title chasing reds in 4-0 mid week win over Stockport County Blues

On a gorgeous, breezy summer evening, FC’s Women maintained their three pronged campaign focus and composure with a professional 4-0 league win over Stockport County Blues at their Woodley home; now requiring five points from their remaining three games to secure the title. Jess Battle scored two first half goals with Jess McCarrick adding two after the break.

Stockport started brightly and former FC’er Olivia Gannon fashioned an early chance for the hosts with Gemma Jackson saving well and clearing from her near post. A minute later, Helen Molloy tried her luck from range half volleying just wide of goal.

United, perhaps slower to adapt to the rather uneven surface and thick grass, soon adapted and settled into their possession based rhythm with Cara Fields and Olivia Greenhalgh having ‘sighters’ on the Stockport goal before Jess Battle finally sealed the breakthrough just before the quarter hour. Chelsea Patient launched a throw from her own half down the line for Fields to square into the path of Fran Sullivan; the midfielder crafted a ball over the top and the tenacious Battle clashed with the keeper who bravely rushed from her line. Battle won the tussle and fired the loose ball past two covering defenders and into the back of the net.

Stockport player of the game and their keeper Fran Singleton saved well from Kirsty Chambers and Sullivan rifled a shot just past the post as the reds looked to increase their lead quickly and just after the half hour mark they did just that. Battle scored her and the game’s second as Sullivan rode a couple of challenges cutting in from the right flank and squaring to the instinctive FC No 9 who feinted right swiftly turning back to her left, wrong footing the defence and keeper slotting her shot into the opposite bottom corner from 8 yards.

The second half saw Stockport increase their intensity, pressing with more urgency as Gannon, lofting a ball on the breeze from range towards the FC goal, saw her effort comfortably dealt with by Jackson.

On the hour the game was effectively ended as a contest as Fields picked out the burst forward by McCarrick who kept her composure as Singleton raced from her line; McCarrick lifting her shot over the advancing keeper and into the back off the net.

United soaked up concerted Stockport endeavour with a combination of substitute keeper Chloe Ainsworth and full back Fliss Winters bravely denying the home side an almost certain goal. United ended the game with a flourish; Jennifer Lomax facing her own goal in the centre circle produced a cheeky back heel into McCarrick who played the ball wide to Alice Forshaw sprinting to the edge of the area to take the return pass. As the home defence parted obligingly, the FC No17 fired her shot into the top corner two minutes into stoppage time.

United now turn their attention to Sunday’s Argyle Sports Cup Semi Final v CMB Ladies; taking place in the main stadium with the winners set to meet Stockport County 1st Team in the bank holiday Monday final. Get yourself to our football ground and cheer the treble chasers in pursuit of more silverware. Thank You.

FC Player of the game: Olivia Greenhalgh – superb 90 minutes of largely unsung but crucial midfield craft, knitting things together alongside Rebecca Foster, Fran Sullivan and Cara Fields on a very challenging surface.
