FC United beaten at Nuneaton Town

FC United still only have one away win in the league all season as the Reds slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Liberty Way against a lively Nuneaton Town side.

Injuries and suspensions meant that player-manager Tom Greaves had to make changes to the side. New signing Danny Racchi made his debut for the club and Tyrell Palmer started a game for the first time.

The home side were certainly the team in the ascendency in the first half as they pressed the FC backline. The game was short on clear chances, Kennedy Digie testing Lloyd Allinson with a shot but there was nothing to note early on.

In the 29th minute, the home side finally took the lead. A throw on the right found its way to Ashley Chambers who made no mistake with a side foot shot from the edge of the box. The half was short on clear chances but the home side certainly deserved their half time lead.

The second half started in exactly the same way with Chambers almost doubling his tally when he shot wide after Allinson spilt a shot. On 50 minutes the lead should have doubled when Tom Elliott seemed to have the goal at his mercy but he blasted over from six yards.

It took to the 54th minute for FC to even have a sight on goal. Greaves broke down the right and played the ball in, it was cleared to Racchi at the edge of the box but his shot was comfortably saved by Dean Lyness.

On 66 minutes, substitute Sam Tattun came close when his cross bounced off the bar and the ball fell to safety. With around 10 minutes left to go, FC finally played some football worthy of the name with a flowing move involving a number of players that ended with Joel Senior upended on the edge of the box.

The free-kick was curled over the bar, but this move just proved the frustration as it showed the football that the fans know the team is capable of.

The game ended with a scramble in the Nuneaton box that almost produced a goal but that would have been harsh on the home side who dominated throughout and fully deserved the three points.

There were a couple of plus points for FC United: Matty Hughes and Sam Baird coped well with the home side attack at times and Racchi showed in the first half especially before tiredness understandably crept in, that he should be a good addition to the FC squad.

The players now need need to regroup and look to continue the excellent home record against Chorley on Friday night.

Website man of the match - Sam Baird. Made a couple of slips early on but did well against a dominant team who were on the attack for most of the game.
