FC United suffer narrow defeat at fellow strugglers Gainsborough Trinity

FC United suffer narrow defeat at fellow strugglers Gainsborough TrinityFC United suffered a poor 1-0 defeat at fellow strugglers Gainsborough Trinity on a cold Saturday afternoon in Lincolnshire.

The Reds never really got going and were 1-0 down inside 10 minutes following a defensive mix up. A Sam Baird header back to Lloyd Allinson fell very short and the keeper hesitated, allowing Ashley Worsfold in to round him and roll into an empty goal. The visitors never recovered.

The goal was the start of a number of chances for Gainsborough, Liam King seeing a good effort deflected wide, Michael Jacklin finishing poorly at the far post from a corner, and another Allinson mistake not punished when he dropped the ball, the resulting shot being fired over the bar.

At the other end, there were half chances for FC. A counter attack by Joel Logan saw Kieran Glynn fed in, but his shot was blocked. Matthew Hughes saw a long shot hit straight at the home keeper and a good Logan cross was sliced over his own goal by Jordan Richards but in truth if Trinity had gone in a couple of goals up, no one could have complained.

The second half was a bit of a damp squib from both sides. Joel Senior cleared from the line after Nathan Stainfield fired at goal and Zac Corbett going on a mazy run that saw his shot just wide.

With six minutes remaining, Corbett almost stole an unexpected point when a cross from the right winged around the box. The ball fell to Corbett who saw his shot crash off the far post and be cleared by the home defence.

As Tom Greaves said in his post-match interview, the players weren’t at the races and it was a bad day at the office. The players do have an ideal opportunity to put that right with a trip to Marine in the FA Trophy before a difficult run of league fixtures.

Website man of the match - Thin gruel again this week, but before his game was ended by a knock, Joel Logan again showed that he was the most likely FC United player to create anything at all.
