17/18 League campaign off to a 17-0 flying start for FC's Women

17/18 League campaign off to a 17-0 flying start for FC’s WomenA feast of football was on offer at Broadhurst Park on Sunday afternoon as the Women launched into their league campaign with a ruthless 17-0 victory over new side City of Liverpool FC Ladies. This was followed by the classic, title winning FC side of 2005/06 grinding out a 4-4 draw against the Jet 2 All Stars in aid of funding further treatment for Natalie, partner of former FC player and Coach Dave Brown. A great example of the FC family coming together to support a great cause and for those who witnessed both games, a value for money haul of 25 goals in one afternoon.
In a clear statement of intent to the rest of the league, United’s Women were on the case from the first whistle to last with Jess Battle scoring the opener and the first of her 4 goal salvo after just 33 seconds. The red’s were 8-0 up at the break with another brace from Battle, two for Captain, Kirsty Chambers playing her 100th competitive game out of 114 possible appearances stretching back to the first season for the women in 2012/13. Rebecca Foster and Fran Sullivan scored one each as did debutant Yvette Loukes wrapping up the first half tally in the 37th minute. Nichol Forster was unlucky to not be on the score sheet but contributed to the half with several assists.

The second half continued in a similar vein with Sullivan scoring her second on 51 minutes as substitute Ella Schickhoff added two of her own with the game’s 10th and 11th strikes. Chambers completed her hatrick before adding two more in quick succession; her final strike being the goal of the game – a rocket into the top corner from the angle of the 18 yard box. Inside the last 5 minutes Foster bagged her second before Olivia Greenhalgh concluded the scoring on 88 minutes with a fine sweeping drive.

Despite the clearly one sided performance and score line, credit must go to Liverpool who despite overwhelming odds, battled superbly throughout with keeper Sarah Barr making some fantastic saves whilst Captain Emma Morgan put in a spirited performance leading by example. Striker Sophie Hughes also played well, crashing a superb strike off the FC United bar from 30 yards on the half hour. Additionally our visitors had no substitutes due to a crippling combination of injuries and illness and we wish them a speedy return to full strength and all the best for the remainder of the season.

This Sunday coming FC’s women are back in FA cup action playing Wigan Athletic (from a division above) in the 2nd qualifying round away at Billinge Soccer Centre, WN5 7TY. This will undoubtedly be a really tough test and will come 24 hours after the men play their 2nd qualifying tie away to Handsworth Parramore at Sandy Lane, Worksop, S80 1UJ. Why not make it an FC United FA Cup weekend and I’m sure both teams would appreciate all our support which could make a real difference to their chances of progression.

Historical Stats and Facts from Neil Boo:
Jess Battle completed the women’s team 52nd hatrick today followed by Kirsty Chambers notching the 53rd their 7th and 14th personal hatricks for the reds.

Debutant Yvette Loukes scored today becoming the 20th FC Woman to have scored on their competitive debut.

Kirsty Chambers today became the first player for FC’s Women to reach a century of competitive appearances missing only 14 games since her debut as a second half substitute in the team’s second ever game; a 6-0 away win at Middleton Athletic 5 years and 1 day ago on 9th September 2012. With her 5 goals today Kirsty has bagged an incredible 117 goals in her 100 appearances – that’s three more goals than the total number of games played by the team – surely a record anywhere?

Ella Schickhoff scored the 600th competitive goal for FC’s Women with her 58th minute strike and Fran Davies goes level with current record holder Beth Hayes, appearing in her 53rd consecutive game for the reds.
