FC United stay 12th after stalemate at Curzon Ashton

FC United remain in 12th position in the Vanarama National League North after a 0-0 draw away at Curzon Ashton on Easter Monday afternoon.

In windy conditions, which neither side totally mastered, a goalless draw was a fair result. Despite neither team creating lots of chances, both did have great chances to win the game, with the two goalkeepers rescuing a point for their respective teams.

From the off it was clear that the home team would be looking to make this local derby a physical game and the United players may be glad of a few days off after a few of the tackles which saw five players booked during the first 45 minutes.

But with the wind behind their backs it was the men in red who looked like they would be the team to make the breakthrough with Jerome Wright giving the Curzon full back Simon Woodford a torrid time, during which he was booked and then substituted at half time.

Despite United being on top they didn’t really create much and with two tough games on heavy pitches in three days you felt they just may not be able to bring the same intensity to the second half.

This proved to be true as in the second half it was the home team who got on top of the game but the windy conditions really didn’t help proceedings and clear cut chances were few and far between.

Curzon substitute Ryan Brooke had the best opportunity to win the game after a lovely cutback from the left he found himself, unmarked in the United box. He placed his effort to the right of David Carnell but the United stopper somehow managed to shift his weight and get a foot to the ball to turn it wide.

In the dying moments both teams had chances to win the game. Firstly, Dale Johnson turned in the box and got a low effort on the home goal but saw his effort stopped by the legs of Hakan Burton, before the Nash broke forward and after cutting in onto his right foot from the left flank Matthew Warburton saw his shot from a tight angle well saved by Carnell.

Both teams had good chunks of the match on top but with neither really controlling the majority of the game and chances being so hard to come across a draw was probably the fairest reflection over the course of the game and keeps United unbeaten against their former landlords.

The draw stretches FC’s unbeaten run to four matches, with ten points from a possible 12. Margy’s men have now gone three games without conceding a goal which is a big plus point at this stage of the season

Website man of the match: David Carnell – Kept his third consecutive clean sheet and his saves from Warburton and Brooke saw United come away with a point.
