FCUM past players draw with Leigh Genesis

FC United’s past players team celebrated the tenth anniversary of the club’s first ever game with an entertaining 3-3 draw at the Alder Street ground in Atherton on Thursday evening.

On what was a good evening of football the players proved that much like a fine wine a non-league footballer gets better with age, even if that fine wine is in a slightly tighter shirt and pair of shorts than they were a few years ago.

The always popular Barrie George was in between the sticks for FC United once more and pulled off a couple of great reaction saves in the first half. With the scores still at 0-0, George got down low to his left to pull off an impossible penalty save to keep the game level.

United took the lead through Matty Boland with 15 minutes left in the first half which set off a run of four goals before the break. Leigh levelled up from a corner almost straight away, before that man Steve Torpey was at it again with a great goal to put United back in front.

It wasn’t just the forwards rolling back the years, as David Chadwick went in with a hard challenge that gave away a free-kick which Leigh scored from to make the game 2-2 at the break.

Leigh Genesis came out quick in the second half and had a goal disallowed before they eventually did take the lead with about half an hour left.

But just when you thought the legs may have been giving way, Phil Power headed home from inside the box to make the game level once more, before obliging to the calls to see his tan by lifting his shirt over his head which drew some constructive criticism for his physique from the FC United faithful.

It seemed fitting that the game finished level (as it did 10 years ago), but it was a great way to mark the anniversary with a game played in good spirits with a great touch of nostalgia in there as well.

The first team squad now travel to Buxton this Saturday for what should be another testing encounter.

Website Man of the Match: Matty Tierney – Ran the game from the centre of the park, reminding us what a talent he is on the pitch.
