FC United focused on a win at Skelmersdale

FC United focused on a win at SkelmersdaleRegardless of results elsewhere, FC United manager Karl Marginson is focusing on the task in hand ahead of tonight’s trip to Skelmersdale United.

The Reds need five more points from the last four games to be absolutely certain of sealing the title at the seventh attempt but if Workington fail to beat already relegated Trafford at home and Ashton can’t manage a win at Ramsbottom, then three points would be enough for Karl Marginson’s side to be crowned champions tonight.

As ever, Margy is expecting the players to concentrate on the game ahead, take care of their own business and not be concerned about what other teams do. He said: “It’s just another game and like all games we play, we’re aiming to win. If our rivals drop points – great but we can’t rely on that, so we just have to stick to our job and get the points we need.???

Whilst FC United are on an incredible run of 21 league games without defeat, our opponents have plummeted from the summit of the table to ninth place after a winning just one of their last 10 league matches, drawing two and losing seven. The West Lancashire club topped the table from 11 October 2014 right the way through to 24 February 2015, albeit having played more games than their rivals for most of that time.

After leading the league for four months, Skem were finally toppled by FC United when we beat Halesowen 1-0 at the Tameside Stadium. Despite Skem’s demise, FC United will not be taking our opponents lightly. Skem’s players will be fighting hard to become the only team to take maximum points from FC this season.

The two sides have met seven times since 2007 and honours are even with three victories each and one draw. Earlier this season, Skem inflicted an unfortunate 2-1 defeat against the Reds at Bower Fold with a suspiciously off-side Tom Ince goal in the 90th minute. The FC United faithful have very happy memories of taking on Skem though having won the biggest occasion between the two clubs 4-1 in the May 2008 Unibond Northern Premier League Division 1 North play–off final at Gigg Lane.

Margy expects to take a full squad to The West Lancashire College Stadium tonight and is eager to bring back the three points. Skelmersdale United versus FC United is tonight with a 7.45pm kick-off. It’s pay on the gate as usual. Get yourself to that football ground and cheer on the Reds as they aim for another vital victory.
