FC United move seven points clear after Wednesday night win at Whitby

FC United once again moved seven points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division after a 4-0 win at Whitby Town on Wednesday night with goals from Tom Greaves, Jerome Wright, Greg Daniels and Rory Fallon.

The league leaders broke the deadlock on seven minutes when Greaves was released beyond the home defence. His first shot was blocked but he persevered by winning the ball back and rolling it into the net.

The Seasiders were certainly in the game and had a spell of chances, Lee Mason firing at goalkeeper Dave Carnell, David McTiernan shooting just wide and a long throw causing panic in the FC United defence before being cleared from the six yard box.

The Reds were seeing most of the ball and a good move saw Wright get behind the Whitby defence, his cross being beaten away by Shane Bland. On 37 minutes the lead was doubled when Greaves was played in and was pulled back as he entered the box. Wright dispatched the penalty straight down the middle of the goal to make it 2-0.

With three minutes left in the half, a cross from the right was volleyed towards goal by Craig Linfield, Bland saved but the ball fell to Daniels who bundled the ball home.

In all honesty, the second half was somewhat of an anticlimax with FC United understandably happy just to contain the home side. Jamie Clarke forced Carnell into a save and the Reds ’keeper was in the game again on 73 minutes, tipping a shot from Dale Hopson wide.

On 90 minutes the scoring was completed by Fallon, who notched his first goal for the club. Fallon was released into the box and the chance seemed lost when he stumbled but he recovered to fire into the far corner of the goal. There was also still time for Callum Byrne to hit the crossbar from the edge of the box with the final touch of the game.

Website man of the match: Lewis Lacy. Another calm, assured performance in the heart of the FC United defence.
