FC United aim to climb table as we welcome Workington

FC United aim to climb table as we welcome WorkingtonFC United of Manchester are looking to get back up the Evo-Stik Premier Division table as we welcome new boys Workington AFC to Bower Fold this Saturday.

The Reds are still riding high after coming back from 2-0 down with 15 minutes to go to beat Barwell 3-2 in the FA Trophy on Wednesday night. But now Karl Marginson’s eighth placed side must get back to winning ways in the league and climb back up the table.

Depending on how other results go, FC United could go back up to fourth with a win. The good news is that everyone has come through the week unscathed, meaning Margy will be spoilt for choice when selecting his starting XI, particularly in midfield.

Callum Byrne was the standout player in both matches against Barwell and capped both performances with a goal. Meanwhile, David Birch and Craig Lindfield, who both missed Wednesday’s victory through suspension, will be available and Matthew Wolfenden should be back to match fitness after coming through 90 minutes after his three game ban.

Matthew Walwyn will also in contention for a place in the starting line-up after coming off the bench to set up the equaliser and score the winner on Wednesday night. Frank Van Gils has also impressed during his three recent games.

Top-scorer Tom Greaves looks set to continue up front and Greg Daniels is available to partner him but Margy may be tempted to ask Wolfenden or Walwyn to play in the supporting role.

Saturday will be the first time FC United have met Workington as the Cumbrian club, who are also known as The Reds, were relegated from the Conference North last season after nine years in the division.

The Cumbrian Reds have so far struggled to adapt to life in the Evo-Stik Premier Division and currently lie in 12th place. However, they are just five points behind FC United with a game in hand.

Having won only once in their last five matches, confidence will not be high but victory over FC United could be just what they need to kickstart their season, so Margy’s men will have to be at their best and hopefully for longer than 15 minutes.

FC United of Manchester versus Workington AFC is this Saturday at Bower Fold with kick-off at the traditional time of three o’clock. It’s pay on the gate as usual with prices voted for by our members - £8 for adults, £5 for concessions, and £2 for under-18s.

Forget doing the Christmas shopping, after Wednesday’s five goal thriller, can you afford to miss the match? Get yourself to that football ground.
