Stonewall thanks FC United for anti-homophobia stand

Stonewall, the charity which seeks to address the needs of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the wider community, has thanked clubs including FC United who took part in their recent Rainbow Laces campaign.

FC players and staff wore rainbow coloured laces for the Prescot Cables cup match to support the awareness campaign which aimed to show that the UK supports lesbian, gay and bisexual players and fans. The rainbow colours, which are recognised as an international sign of peace, were adopted by the anti-homophobia movement many years ago.

Richard Lane, media manager at Stonewall, said: "The response from clubs, like FC United, players, fans and the general public was incredible. The excitement and enthusiasm that the campaign generated was really remarkable and it’s inspiring to see a national conversation about homophobia in sport taking place."

This followed FC’s support for Manchester’s Pride festival in August, which saw the club fly the rainbow flag at two matches during the week of events and provide raffle prizes for the Gay Football Supporters’ Network stall.
FC’s club and company secretary Lindsey Howard said: “FC United prides itself on being non-discriminatory and helping to provide football for all. This is written into our constitution, so we feel supporting events like this fulfils the duties agreed by our members and it is also the right thing to do for wider society. These kind of campaigns are in tune with our ethos as a football club, democratically agreed by co-owners, and we are proud to support organisations seeking to help gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender fans and players feel welcome in sport, while also backing the need for tolerance in our game as a whole."
