FC United aiming to push on from Prescot win to Frickley victory

FC United aiming to push on from Prescot win to Frickley victoryFC United aim to take the form shown in Sunday’s comprehensive 4-1 FA Cup victory over Prescot Cables into the league tonight as we travel to Frickley Athletic to play our game in hand over league leaders Curzon Ashton and Skelmersdale United.

The unbeaten Reds have managed a solid but underwhelming start to this season’s Evo-Stik Premier Division campaign with six draws and two victories. However, the weekend’s cup exploits, albeit against lower league opposition, could be just the tonic FC United need to boost confidence and start climbing the table.

The Reds currently lie in ninth position but just six points behind the league’s two pacesetters with a game in hand, which is played tonight, meaning a good run of victories could easily catapult us towards the top of the league. Tonight’s opposition are bottom of the table with five points, having won once, drawn twice and lost five times.

Manager Karl Marginson will be hoping to have experienced centre-back James Knowles available again after missing the last three matches with a groin strain. Although, Chris Lynch and Luke Ashworth, along with stand-in fullback Scott Cheetham, have coped magnificently in Knowles’ absence.

Meanwhile, Joe Fox, who has also missed the last three matches, will be eager to be fit to play against his former club. The winger took a knock after scoring the winner against Blyth Spartans two weeks ago and has been absent since.

United have an impeccable record against Frickley, other than a Northern Premier Challenge Cup defeat two years ago. The standings between the two sides since we first met in 2008 are 10 wins for FC United, three draws and that one Challenge Cup victory for Frickley. The Reds will be looking for more of the same tonight.

Get yourself to that football ground.
