Development Squad win against Curzon

In the second cup game of the week, the Development Squad progressed to a knockout quarter-final with a 2-0 win against a strong Curzon Ashton team at Nicholls. Both goals were scored by Ryan Lyons, courtesy of a free kick and a penalty.

A crowded programme in a Lancashire League Cup saw the reds travel to Bootle on Tuesday and win 2-1, on Friday night Curzon played a young side against Bootle, losing 5-0 before sending a stronger side to Nicholls on Saturday morning.

A high wind throughout the game affected performance and Curzon Ashton nearly took advantage in the first thirty seconds, Danny Tavaris unfortunate to get beyond the FC back line yet see his shot drift just wide.

FC United worked hard, and fought their way back into the game, Jon Poizer had the best early chances, most notably shooting just wide from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Jason Fowles came close soon after. In truth neither side dominated the game, the wind along with some hard but fair tackling stopped anyone from getting the ball down and establishing a period of possession. As a result the half ended goalless with neither keeper truly tested.

The second half started with more promise and both sides could have scored in the first five minutes. Frank van Gils started and finished a move which swept across the pitch, his header went just over. Curzon could have benefitted from an own goal shortly afterwards. Lyons turned a cross from the Curzon right towards goal and was rescued by a sharp save from Chris Taylor.

Ryan made amends just on the hour, scoring with a free kick, taken out on the left wing about 25 yards out from goal. His kick going between keepers head and cross bar with no-one else getting near it.

Despite their best efforts, that goal effectively ended Curzon’s chance of progress in the competition; a header by the far post from a long throw that was easily saved by Taylor was their best chance.

FC United looked for more goals; it seemed that would be without success until the last couple of minutes. A penalty, the result of a foul on Mike Taylor was scored low to the keeper’s right by Lyons.
