FC United youngsters beaten at West Didsbury & Chorlton

A FC United XI containing many members of the new Development Squad gave West Didsbury & Chorlton a good run for their money before being beaten 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Gareth Thomas, Trey Lewis and Tommy Walsh provided the home response to a Jon Poizer strike in the first half.

With a team full of young players, Matthew Tierney was given the captain’s armband and showed his class and experience throughout the game, demanding the ball and controlling United’s best moves from the centre of the park.

The home team had the best chances early on with United ‘keeper Ryan Barker forced out of his goal to make a good one-on-one block, before minutes later Ryan Lyons having to clear off the line.

But it was FC United who took the lead after some good work on the right flank from Yousif Yousif saw a ball squared across the box for the on-rushing Pozier to place home and give United the lead.

Tierney burst from midfield late on but his effort from 25 yards did nothing more than sting the home ‘keeper’s gloves and moments later the home team were awarded a penalty after a shot from outside the box hit an arm in the FC defence and the referee pointed to the spot.

Thomas stepped up confidently and Barker managed to get a hand to the ball down to his left but couldn’t keep the ball out with what was the last kick of the first half.

The home team made wholesale changes at the start of the second half and the tempo of the game suffered a little and the second half was a very scrappy affair, with neither team getting control of the game an often a long ball over the top was the chosen method and all too often cleared by each defence.

The home team took the lead late on after a great individual effort from Lewis saw him slalom in and out of three FC United defenders before firing home.

This lead was then extended in stoppage time as second half substitute Kevin Masirika sold Barker short with a back-pass and Walsh popped the ball through Barker’s legs to give the hosts a 3-1 victory.

A good run out for the young players and Frank van Gils impressed with his terrier like attitude of never giving anything up on the evening. United’s next game is of course at AFC Wimbledon this Saturday.
