Bablesberg and Dresden tours

Guided neighborhood walk through the ‚Red Nowawes‘ (Babelsberg)

The ‘Red Nowawes’(another name for Babelsberg) is a legend, but also historical reality. It is part of the political traditions and heritage of our active supporters’ scene. Nowawes was founded as colony of Bohemian weavers in the 18th century, and soon grew into a small industrial centre in the outskirts of royal Prussian residency of Potsdam. Textile industries, shoe factories, locomotion works, as well as the film and record industry soon made Nowawes a nerve centre of working class culture in the region.

The ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels soon left their mark in Nowawes’ public life. Social democracy and later the communist movement were dominant parts of the political culture here. The revolutionary drive at the end of the First World War and during the Weimar Republic was always very present here at the gates of Potsdam. The huge election rallies of Karl Liebknecht, after whom our stadium is named, play an important part in the history of this working class neighborhood, as well as the resistance and general strike against the fascist Kapp Putsch in 1920. But Nowawes also has a proud tradition of resistance against the Nazis ranging from local workers fighting in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War, to taking revenge for the killing of the communist leader Ernst Thälmann.

We want to tell the story of this extraordinary neighborhood and show you some of the sights where it actually happened. Join us when we (re-)visit our roots!
