Warrington topple young reds in title shoot out.

FC United youth drew their home season to a close with a last throw of the dice in their attempt to defend the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division title against current table toppers Warrington Town. Sadly for the reds it was not to be, a second half strike by Liam Turner sealed a win for the visitors and ended home dreams.

Warrington in truth were the better side on the day, closing and harrying the reds at every opportunity and creating plenty of chances of their own, a third minute corner headed just over. FC started to get a foot hold in the game when the visitors lost striker Dylan Glass after just seven minutes, Glass had caused problems in all the previous meetings.

Yousif Yousif had perhaps the best chance for the home side in the ninth minute when he was able to beat an offside trap and advance from the halfway line. Sadly Vaughn in the visitors goal was able to make a big enough target to be able to smother the shot; a situation that our own keeper Josh Broadbent was called upon to deal with several times in the second half.

After eighteen minutes Jonathan Poizer struck the bar from the edge of the box after a neat move involving Yousif and Frank van Gils and soon after Jack Burgess was just denied by Vaughn when trying to run on to a Kial Callacher free kick.

Warrington’s Christopher Bandell had the ball in the home net after half an hour but it was ruled out for an offside call that surprised both benches. Four minutes later they had a shot cleared off the line after breaking the length of the pitch after dealing with a corner from a Poizer break as Yousifs’ shot was deflected.

In the second half it was much the same story, as after a bright start by United, Warrington proceeded to dominate the game. The goal came on 65 minutes when Turner reacted quickest as the ball bounced around the home 6 yard box from a free kick that the defence failed to clear.
From then on the game was largely played in midfield, the visitors had most of the possession but FC did not stop striving for an equaliser, the best chance coming in the dying minutes when captain, Callacher, thrust into attack to make use of his height was found by Lewis Adams and lobbed the ball over the advancing Vaughan, unfortunately his effort also cleared the crossbar and Warrington left victorious.

The reds now close their season on May 12th when they travel to Prescot for what is sure to be a warm welcome from their Merseyside hosts. The game on the last day of the youth team season may well ultimately decide the destination of the title as Prescot are currently six points behind, with four games to play and two games in hand over Warrington. The reds will welcome vocal support as they aim to have one last word in who their title successors will be.

ERRATUM.

In the last report it was suggested that Frank van Gils had mishit a first shot for his goal against Altrincham. This was the view from the bench that your reporter had. Frank insists that such reporting gives no credit for his dazzling footwork and that the move was entirely intended. We are happy to accept Frank’s version of the goal and offer our apologies to him.
