Stafford game a springboard for success, says skipper

We knew when we came in the dressing room at half time against Stafford Rangers on Saturday that we needed to do better. Basically, we were giving the ball away too much and weren’t working hard enough, but the manager had a word and we took it on board. The difference in the second half was there for everyone to see I think and in the end we could have won by more than the 3-0 scoreline.

We got tighter on the opposition in the second 45 and stopped them getting wide and down our flanks. The new additions we had started gelling too and we looked much more settled and passed the ball better. Our finishing was much improved too and I was delighted to see Tom Greaves mark his debut with a goal. And what a strike it was!

Tom also had a hand in our first two goals so he can be pleased with his first game. The fans certainly enjoyed his goal and if he can keep that up then we’ll be in a great position come the end of the season.

As I’ve said before, we want to win this league. Starting 2013 with two wins and scoring six goals in the process gives us the momentum to kick on from here and pick up more points in January to keep climbing the table. We’ve assembled a very strong squad this year and we need to focus on a strong second half of the season.

We have games in hand too so that makes our league position look even better. Given the number of games we have coming up, the importance of our squad can’t be underestimated and I expect all the lads to play their part over the coming weeks. While we’d rather have the points on the board, we’ll take the games in hand and get on with it.

Also playing their part on Saturday were our fans. To record our biggest home gate of the season on a cold day in January shows their enthusiasm and support. It’s such a boost to the players to see and hear that support and it really made a difference against Stafford. If we keep up that effort on and off the pitch over the next three months we’ll give ourselves every chance of success come the end of the season.
