Reds return to Chorley

United return to Chorley FC’s Victoria Park this Saturday to take on Atherton Laburnum Rovers in what should be another intriguing encounter.

After suffering a 2-0 home defeat on the opening day of the season to Trafford, Atherton LR have since won three in a row; two in the league against Formby and Squires Gate and an impressive 5-1 demolition of Northern Counties East League Division One outfit Parkgate in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.

Rovers, who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, were formed by a group of youngsters in 1956 and originally took their name from the Laburnum field that they used to play on.

They are no strangers to success having won the North West Counties Division One and NWCL Championship Trophy double twice in back-to-back campaigns in 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons.

In the 199/94 season, Rovers also recorded their highest ever attendance that stands at 1,856 for their FA Vase encounter against Aldershot. They went on to semi-finals of the competition that year until losing out in a replay to Diss Town from the Ridgeons Eastern Counties Premier League.

Two good seasons in the UniBond League saw Rovers make steady progress, but then financial trouble struck and the club were relegated for the first time in their history.

They barely managed to fight off liquidation and with large debts to clear there was very little money to spend on the team. Securing the future of the entire club was absolute priority and two seasons of struggle followed on the pitch which culminated in the club’s second relegation, this time to the NWCL Division Two.

In 2000/2001 things took a turn for the better and Rovers put together nine straight victories to win promotion back to Division One in their final game of the season. Since returning to the division though it’s been a struggle with 12th being their highest final position.

FC United expect to be able to pick from a full squad and there could be a debut for new signing and former Stafford Rangers winger Jamie Phoenix.

Kick off is 3pm this Saturday 26th August at Victory Park, Chorley which was the venue for the away fixture against Daisy Hill last season. It is pay on the gate with tickets £7 for adults, £3 concessions.
