Get set for Big Coat Day 2012

This year’s FC United Big Coat Day takes place on Wednesday 26 December 2012, ahead of the FC United v Witton Albion game, which kicks off at 3pm at Gigg Lane, Bury.

Last winter 5,000 excess deaths occurred in the North West, many because of lack of heating and warm clothing. That’s one person every 30 minutes. FC United hopes to play its part in helping the homeless and needy through the winter months by asking people to bring their spare winter clothing down to Gigg Lane on Boxing Day, where charities the Mustard Tree and the Boaz Trust will load the clothing into vans to take away and distribute to those most in need.

The collection will take place from noon and finish at 3pm when FC United’s home fixture against Witton Albion kicks off.

A range of organisations have already signed up to support Big Coat Day this year. They include Royal Mail Manchester, Bury Council , BAE Systems, BCM Consulting, Arco Workwear, Witton Albion , NHS Manchester , Salford University, Salford NHS, Neighbourhood Services Didsbury, Manchester Jobcentre Plus, Guinness Housing together with various FC branches and individuals organising local collections.

AFC Masters, a football team for disabled children and adults based in the Bolton area, has already started a collection for Big Coat Day. The Masters have been asking colleagues, family and friends for any unwanted coats for the appeal. AFC Masters general manager and leisure and befriending coordinator at Bolton Shared Care, Iain Massingham, said: "Big Coat Day is a fantastic example of FC United doing what it does best, being a community club. AFC Masters are part of that community and are doing their bit to help support this worthy cause.???

Why not make it a family event this Boxing Day and get down to Gigg Lane - it promises to be a great day where together we can make a real difference by helping others less fortunate. So come down, enjoy the game and bring an extra coat!
