FC United beat Mossley to set up trip to Stamford

A comfortable 3-1 replay victory at Mossley on Tuesday with goals from Jake Cottrell, Nicky Platt and David Birch means FC United will travel to Stamford in the second qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy.

It was the home side who started the brightest with a chance in only the second minute when Ben Richardson had a shot blocked and Jayson Gorton blasted the follow up over the bar.

A minute later the scourge of FC United in the original tie - Kayde Coppin found room behind Lee Neville but his shot was saved by James Spencer.

Jerome Wright was in the action at the other end when he chested down a Dave Birch pass but his shot was wide. Wright was involved again on 15 minutes when he was involved in a flowing FC move that ended with Mike Norton shooting at the keeper.

Two minutes later Norton was unlucky again when his header was superbly tipped wide by Martin Pearson. Despite Mossley seeing much of the ball, FC looked dangerous on the attack and it was no surprise when they took the lead.

Phil McGrath on his first FC start pulled the ball across the box where it eventually found Jake Cottrell who slotted the ball into the bottom corner on his 150th appearance for the club.

Just on the half hour, Coppin again looked dangerous as he began a mazy run that ended when he shot over the bar.

Mossley started the second half with ten men as their skipper Dave Young had been sent off during the break apparently for something he said to the officials.

The half started cagily with neither team imposing themselves and it took till the 59th minute for the next bit of action when a Nicky Platt free-kick was drilled into the net to double the lead.

This seemed to kill off any hope for the home side as FC dominated the game, Dean Stott seeing a header saved by Pearson and a Norton lob hitting the bar and going over the top.

Coppin came close to pulling a goal back on 80 minutes with a shot just wide but two minutes later the game was over and substitutes Chris Amadi and Cedric Krou combined to tee up Birch who rifled in a shot from outside of the box that almost took the net out of the ground.

Coppin finally did get the goal his play again deserved when he rounded Spencer and rolled the ball home but by then the game was won by FC.

Website man of the match: Adam Jones - Again solid, dependable and reliable.
