FC United up for FA Cup derby clash at Salford City

FC United make the short trip to Moor Lane, Kersal to take on local neighbours Salford City in the second qualifying of the FA Cup sponsored by Budweiser on Saturday afternoon and manager Karl Marginson is looking forward to an exciting cup-tie.

The Ammies currently ply their trade one division below the Reds in the Evo-Stik Northern League and have made a decent start to the season with two wins, one draw and one defeat in the league and two emphatic victories in the FA Cup – 5-1 over Hemsworth Miners Welfare and 4-0 at Lancaster City.

The two sides have met competitively three times before and each occasion has been very closely contested. FC United have the upper-hand with two wins to one but it was Salford who drew first blood when they prevented the Reds from making a piece of North West Counties Football history in October 2006.

The newly crowned Division Two champions raced out of the blocks in their second ever season, recording 12 consecutive victories as we started our successful assault on the Division One title. The rampant Reds needed just one more win to set the all-time record.

Salford had other ideas though and injury-time goals from Jamie Baguley and Nick Robinson – both of who later became FC United players – saw them snatch a 2-1 victory on an explosive night at the Willows rugby ground in front of 4,058 spectators, which remains the highest ever attendance for the division.

United didn’t have to wait long to get even. An FA Vase tie saw the two sides meet at the Willows just six weeks later where the Reds advanced with a 3-2 victory courtesy of Stuart Rudd, Simon Carden and David Chadwick.

The following April, a superb hat-trick from Rhodri Giggs saw the Reds come back from 1-0 down to win 4-2 during another pulsating performance at Gigg Lane.

Supporters will be hoping for more of the same tomorrow and Margy is confident the Reds can deliver. He said: “We’ve had three good league and cup fixtures with them in the past but all of that goes out of the window on Saturday. It will all depend on who turns up and plays the best football on the day. If we perform how we know we can, we should be good enough to go through to the next round.???

Saturday’s game is all-ticket and full-match coverage will be available on FCUM Radio.

Please note: There will be a minute’s silence before the match in honour of Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes, the two Greater Manchester police officers who were killed this week.
