Fitness boost as FC United look to extend unbeaten run

FC United have been given a double fitness boost ahead of this Saturday’s Evo-Stik Premier Division clash at home to Nantwich Town with the news that captain Kyle Jacobs and Charlie Anderson have recovered from slight knocks picked up in the 5-0 defeat of Cammell Laird in the FA Cup last weekend but centre-back Adam Jones will require a late fitness test.

The Reds are unbeaten after seven games of the 2012/13 season with four wins and two draws in the league and currently sit in fourth place. They will be looking to extend that run and could potentially go to the top of the table if they beat the Dabbers at Gigg Lane but they know it will be a tough ask.

FC United have enjoyed several exciting clashes with Nantwich since the two sides first met in 2006 and manager Karl Marginson has a lot of respect for the club. He said: “They have had a mixed start but I put that down to them bedding in a few new faces and I am sure with the quality they have that they will soon climb the league and become a threat at the top of the table.

“Jimmy Quinn has coached at league level and is very knowledgeable and canny. He will be telling his team that there will be no better place to start gelling than in front of a big crowd at Gigg Lane. We’ll need to be ready for that and I’m sure we will be.???

Margy also picked out former FC United striker Kyle Wilson as one to watch from the opposition, he said: “We know that Kyle Wilson can be pretty lethal, so our defenders will have to be on their toes to keep him out but we have got what it takes.???

With a seven game undefeated run, this is FC United’s best ever start to the North Premier Division at the fifth consecutive attempt. Margy puts it down to a lot of hard-work in pre-season as well as getting the players to adopt the right mental attitude. He added: “The lads have worked really hard and so far it’s paying off.

“It’s the oldest cliché in football but we are taking it one game at a time. The focus is on the next game and, whereas in the past some of the players might have thought there were easier games against the perceived ‘lesser’ sides, all of the team realise that every single game in an FC United shirt is going to be hard.???

Meanwhile, Margy was keen to pass on his best wishes to Daniel Grimshaw who has left the club to seek more regular first team football. Margy said: “Daniel goes with our best wishes. Understandably, he became a bit frustrated with the lack of opportunities but I have to pick the best team and I can’t play everyone."

FC United versus Nantwich Town is this Saturday at Gigg Lane with the traditional kick-off time of three o’clock. Get yourself to that football ground.
