Defeat at Hyde leaves United still seeking first win

FC United were beaten 3-0 by newly promoted Conference side Hyde but the scoreline doesn’t fully reflect an encouraging performance from the Reds who are still seeking their first win of the pre-season campaign.

It was Hyde who looked dangerous early on, with Dave Kenyon firing over inside 30 seconds and Scott Spencer shooting wide on the quarter hour mark.

As the half wore on, FC found their way into the game, Jerome Wright shooting poorly wide and five minutes later playing in Nick Platt who forced a good save from Dave Carnell.

Just before the half hour, FC should have taken the lead when a break from Wright on the left saw him crossing to Mike Norton who totally missed his kick with the goal begging.

On 32 minutes, Adam Jones thought he had broken the deadlock but saw his header kicked from the line by a Hyde defender.

Hyde were looking dangerous when they attacked and took the lead on 38 minutes when a move down the left, saw the ball worked to the far side where Kenyon curled a shot past James Spencer and into the far corner.

One minute before the break, a quick FC free kick saw Lee Neville put in a good cross where Matthew Wolfenden saw his shot blocked. From the corner Adam Jones headed onto the top of the bar.

Five minutes after the break the lead was doubled when sub Scott Cheetham was robbed of the ball by Spencer who saw his shot saved by Job Worsnop. The ball landed at the feet of the ex Everton striker Phil Jevons and he finished well to make the score 2-0.

On 65 minutes, Worsnop was called into action again when he tipped a shot onto the bar, the follow up shot was well blocked by Dean Stott.

FC were still probing in the Hyde half and Stott saw a header cleared off the line as they looked to get back into the game but in the 89th minute, the lead was increased to 3-0 as Daniel Douglas-Pringle rounded Worsnop and rolled the ball into an empty net.

It was at times a bright performance from FC United, with Daniel Grimshaw again standing out and whilst Hyde deserved their win, the final scoreline did slightly flatter the home side.
