FC United of Manchester’s new women’s team will play their first-ever game on Sunday 8 July 2012 with a friendly against Middleton Athletic Ladies, following very successful trials for the new team, which were held on Sunday 10 June 2012.
The trials saw around 40 players attend a very successful two-hour session at the Nichols campus at The Manchester College. The quality of football on display at the trials was very high and women’s team joint managers John Marsden and Lee Sutton had a very difficult task selecting an initial squad.
John Marsden said: "Both Lee and I were absolutely delighted by the standard of players we saw at the trials. The quality and attitude of the players we have attracted says a lot for what they think about FC United and their desire to play for our club. Those who came were impressed with the set up at FC and extremely keen to be part of the first-ever women’s team squad at FC United."
Following the trials, John and Lee selected an initial squad of 25 women who will attend training over the coming weeks as the squad is further refined and developed in the run up to what will be a debut season in the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League next season. Lee Sutton said: "The trials have given us an excellent platform to begin the hard work of building a team that can be competitive in the league. Training sessions and friendlies over the coming weeks will further hone the squad and John and I are really looking forward to working with a great group of players."
FC United supporters are encouraged to attend the women’s team’s first ever game when they play against Greater Manchester Women’s Football League side Middleton Athletic Ladies on Sunday 8 July 2012. Although a friendly match, it’s an historic game as it will be the first time that a women’s team has taken to the field under the FC United of Manchester name.
