Punk culture, punk football and a veggie café

It’s amazing where FC United members crop up and what they get up to. Take FC fan Phil Fitzpatrick who is currently organising the seventh Strummercamp festival, the annual not-for-profit event celebrating the life, music and influence of Joe Strummer and The Clash.

This year’s event takes place over the jubilee holiday weekend from 1-3 June and the self-styled "friendliest festival around" aims to bring people value for money with more stages and keenly-priced tickets. "This year is a special year," says Phil. "It’s ten years since Joe Strummer died and our seventh festival has a special resonance because ’The Magnificent Seven’ was a song and a single by The Clash from their Sandinista album. The opportunity was too good to miss, so we’re promoting this year’s event as Magnificent Seventh," Phil explained.

Phil has been an FC United fan since the start and you may have seen him outside recent games leafleting for Strummercamp. So, what got him involved in organising festivals? It’s the same ’punk football’ attitude that we have at FC - a DIY approach if you like. If you don’t like the way that that things are being done then just go and do it yourself," he said.

"I used to be involved in putting on Clash tribute nights. A bunch of us though ’let’s do something bigger for Joe’, so we kicked things off in 2006 and things have just grown from there thanks to the hard work and dedication of those involved. Any profit we make goes back into the festival to make it better and over time we’ve assembled a bunch of great people who love it and wouldn’t miss it for the world," said Phil.

Headliners for this year’s Strummercamp include The Jim Jones Review, Dub Pistols, Neck, Goldblade and excitingly, New Model Army. There are five stages in total and loads of acts so there’s plenty to see and hear, as well as aftershow parties, affordable food and drinks, a vegetarian cafe, punk art exhibition, a cinema, face paining and the traditional football five-a-side competition.

All the action takes place at Manchester Rugby Club, Cheadle Hulme, from 1-3 June and tickets cost £35 for one day and £65 for the full weekend camping-included ticket. For full details see www.strummercampfestival.co.uk
