FC United entertain Ashton United on Boxing Day

FC United look to keep up the pace with their promotion rivals as the Robins of Ashton come bob-bob-bobbin’ along to Gigg Lane this Boxing Day.

The Reds are currently seventh in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, six points short of the play-off places, a gap which could be closed this Christmas. Meanwhile, Ashton are back in 16th place.

Despite the difference in league standings, both teams come into the game in a similar run of form with two wins, two draws and one defeat each in their last five league games, so United will have to make sure they don’t take their opponents lightly.

The two sides have meant eight times in exactly three years since their first encounter on Boxing Day 2008 and the Robins just shade it with four wins to United’s three, with one draw. Three of those matches have been played at Gigg Lane and United have a two games to one edge in those fixtures.

The Reds will be looking to get back to winning ways by recording their first and last league victory of December after a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Northwich Victoria last weekend. Despite a decent run of form, cup competitions and draws mean the Reds haven’t actually racked up three points since 23rd November against Kendal.

Ashton meanwhile are unbeaten in three. Former FC United striker Aaron Burns was on the score-sheet for the Robins last week as they gained a credible 1-1 draw at Mickleover Sports. The week before they enjoyed a 1-0 home victory over Kendal and another good draw at Hednesford.

FC United of Manchester versus Ashton United is this Boxing Day at Gigg Lane with a traditional 3pm kick-off. It’s pay on the gate so get yourself to that football ground and don’t forget to bring a spare big coat as you can donate it to charity at the ground. Bring on United.
