Backing for Big Coat Day has come from across the city, including workplaces, housing associations, councillors and faith groups. Notable supporters of the initiative are Bury Council, the Royal Mail, Greater Manchester Fire Service, Guinness Northern Counties Housing Association, Arco Workwear, Jobcentreplus, Housing Providers, Manchester Adult Education Service, Bury FC, Ashton United FC and Burgess Beds Ltd out in Haslingden.
The match itself, FC United’s local derby v Ashton United, is free for under-18s and will feature an FC brass band and even a fire engine and firefighters to foster a genuine family feel to the day. Please bring whatever decent quality clothing that you can spare down to Gigg Lane between 12 noon and 3pm, where it will be collected by charities. Mustard Tree and Boaz, who will then distribute the clothing to the homeless and destitute across the city.
FC United general manager Andy Walsh said: "As a community football club that seeks to make a positive difference, we are delighted to be organising Big Coat Day again this year. Thousands of people in the north west die needlessly each year as a result of the cold and by harnessing the generosity of our fans, our partners and other local people we hope to do something about this."
