Mothers Day present from FC Youth

The FC United youth team travelled to Merseyside and gave the hardy, taxi providing mothers the best gift they could think of, with a second half display to match or perhaps eclipse either of the Saturday comebacks; turning a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 full time win.

The reds were first out of the blocks with three half chances coming to nothing in the first ten minutes, including a snatched shot by Dylan Moloney that drifted just wide. That said, it was a strangely lacklustre performance in the first half as Marine were able to take control of midfield. They took the lead after 13 minutes when a cross from the left drifted beyond the far post, and a largely unopposed header back across goal was tapped in with some ease. Jay Walcott came close after a move involving Harrison Reeve and Scott Cheetham but it was Marine almost doubled their lead on the half hour when a free kick broke to Daniel Kelly, whose shot came back off the bar.

Scott Cheetham did fire home from some distance shortly afterwards but it didn’t count as a FC had already been awarded a free kick. The remainder of the half was a contest for control of midfield with neither keeper asked to make a save.

Half time saw some words of encouragement delivered in the dressing room, Josh Burke came on for Jordan Dainty with Matthew Tierney moving into Central Defence and a sharper focus amongst the FC side. It took just six minutes for the equaliser to come as Banda passed to Scott Cheetham who crossed for Dylan Moloney to head home.

Marine continued to press forward and came close with two long shots before FC took the lead in the 65th minute. Scott Cheetham collected the ball in midfield and drove forward before threading a pass for Banda to escape the Marine back four and fire home at the near post.

Luke Walker then came on for Matt Tierney and was quickly involved in the action putting Scott Cheetham through on goal. He ran round the keeper and appeared to be running out of pitch before managing to turn the ball home and make it 3-1.

Marine then had their best spell of the second half with a number of chances, including two breaks clear of the visitors back four. Poor finishing however meant that the keeper was not tested as much as he perhaps should have been.

The visitors took advantage of that in the last ten minutes with two further goals, firstly in the 88th minute when Scott found space around the edge of the box and was able to drive past Hart in the Marine net and into the bottom corner.

As the game rolled into added on time Sam Howell, signed from Daisy Hill, made his debut and was quickly into the action. His cross found Davison whose first time shot was blocked by Hart but bounced to Jay Walcott who made no mistake.

Based on the second half display FC were deserved winners but 5-1 was perhaps not a fair reflection on the contribution Marine had provided.
