FC Youth up for the cup

The young Reds continued in their defence of the Manchester County FA Cup on Sunday, beating Cranbrook FC from the Tameside League 3-2.

It was a closely fought contest with the visitors having fought back from two FC strikes just after the half hour mark, only to be denied extra time with a winner as the clock was nudging towards the 90th minute.

The first real chance came in the seventh minute when Ryan Lyons tested the keeper from long range, his shot was fumbled and looked as if it might drop in but the keeper recovered in time.

The next action however was an FC substitution in the 11th minute when Adam Berrisford had to be helped from the pitch with suspected ankle ligament damage. The reshuffle that followed saw Ryan revert from left to right-back with flying left winger Jake Haslam dropping to left-back and Ferre Edwards into the centre. Substitute Josh Burke filled the midfield vacancy.

Cranbrook had their first chance shortly afterwards when a free kick was fired narrowly wide. From then FC appeared to take control of the game but with chances missed had nothing to show for it. Stephanos Ioannou had the best of them, one of which saw him chip the ball over an advancing keeper only to see the ball cleared off the line for a corner. From this Jordan Dainty was unlucky with a shot that just cleared the crossbar.

Three minutes later, another corner saw FC United open the scoring. The cross which went beyond the far post was looped back into the middle by Josh Burke and dropped to Ibukun Modupe Ojo who fired home from around 12 yards. It was 2-0 shortly afterwards when Dylan Moloney finished off a fine passing interchange with Stephanos as they broke from the half way line.

Cranbrook pulled a goal back five minutes later as they created several chances, their number 10 managed to head past Joe Grantham and were lucky not to equalise before half-time when a long ball forward caused problems in the FC defence and the effort drifted narrowly wide.

The second half was a closely fought contest with both sides looking to create chances. Roshgar Mousa, who had come on at half time tried to use his pace against a tiring opposition back four but the shots were either off target or with both keepers making routine saves. The one exception to that came in the 62nd minute when Cranbrook were awarded a free kick in a central position around 25 yards out. Their number two fired round the wall and into the net.

FC United pressed for a winner with Jordan providing his usual unspectacular but effective role in defence aided by the terrier like determination of midfielders Scott Cheetham and Nyle Walker. All seemed to be in vain as extra time approached until the 89th minute when a neat move involving Dylan and Roshgar set up Nyle, his fierce drive from the edge of the box was well saved. The resulting corner somehow found its way to Ferre Edwards who drove home from 12 yards.

Cranbrook tried hard to get another equaliser but ultimately without success. They battled hard and were unlucky not to take the game to extra time.
