FC Youth in M6 safari in search of points

Morecambe ’A’ 0-5 FC United U18s

When our youth team last played at St Bride’s Field, they entertained a Morecambe side and proved generous hosts as the visitors took the three points back up the M6. Just four weeks on, the chance to put that right came with the return game at Lancaster and Morecambe College and the favour was returned as the reds put on a near flawless display.

Morecambe were quickest out of the blocks with a chance in the first minute from a free kick on the edge of the FC penalty area. This threat was dealt with and the boys got into their stride. Indeed within 15 minutes the game was effectively over as FC raced into a 3-0 lead. On seven minutes Stephanos Ioannou collected a long clearance from keeper Joe Grantham and headed goalward. His shot hit the post but Dylan Moloney reacted quickest and fired home the rebound.

Two minutes later there was an excellent chance for the second as Stephanos supplied a pass for Gage Eme to break clear of the defence and run round Matthew Calvert in the Morecambe goal. Fortunately for the home side he had done enough to prevent Gage having the angle for a shot. He did pull the ball back to Dylan whose shot was saved.

That was only a temporary reprieve as Gage scored twice in three minutes, firstly with the deftest of flicks at the near post from a Scott Cheetham corner and secondly when the pair next combined with Scott crossing from the left and Gage volleying first time. That shot was helped by a slight deflection but was goal bound none the less.

At this point Morecambe altered their formation and tightened their defence to restrict the FC attack although Luke Kolakowski saw a shot cum cross hit the bar and Gage broke through again on the right wing and fired across the goal in search of a hat-trick when Stephanos was in space screaming for the ball. FC’s number 10 was however not to be denied for long, making it 4-0 midway through the half when he broke clear of the defence and ran round the keeper. He was able to shoot into the then unguarded net.

With the game effectively over at half time all that remained to be done was to make sure that the home side were unable to mount a come back. A superb display of closing space and harassing the opposition by all of the starting eleven and three substitutes made sure that was never likely. Indeed FC were more likely to score throughout the game. If there could possibly be a disappointing aspect to the game it was that it was not until the 72nd minute that they did so. A strong driving run by Gage gave him the space to fire in a fierce shot that the keeper could not hold and Dylan was able to fire home the loose ball. Gage did have the ball in the net again near the end of the game but was adjudged to have fouled a Morecambe defender has he won possession and the game ended with a 5-0 win for FC.
