Class of 2009/10 underway in style

Nantwich U18s 1-3 FC United U18s

A trip to Nantwich might not have been the ideal start to the Youth Team league season, especially this week. Fortunately the lads were having none of it, and saw off their hosts in a thoroughly professional manner.

An early free kick from Carl Fitton had already hit the bar when FC took the lead in the 4th minute. A long throw from Ryan Lyons caused havoc in the Nantwich defence, everyone left it alone and the bounce on the Nantwich 3G pitch, at the back of the main ground bamboozled Michael Jones, the Nantwich Keeper and it headed towards the goal untouched. It wouldn’t have counted if it had gone straight in the goal from a throw in, but fortunately it hit the bar and Dillon Maloney was the first to react with the simplest of tap-ins.

FC dominated the first half and extended their lead in the 27th minute from the penalty spot. A corner from the left had drifted beyond the far post and was about to be headed back when a Nantwich boot was adjudged to have been raised too high in trying to prevent that. Andy Lee drove the kick straight into the middle of the goal as the keeper went to his left. Nantwich had their best and possibly only chance of the half when Josh Brehaut hit the FC Bar.

Unsurprisingly the second half saw a much more competitive display from Nantwich and chances were few and far between. After a couple of half chances either way the first real chance fell to Nantwich when the linesman decided that contact between Nantwich substitute Alistair Howden and Carl Fitton was worthy of a penalty. Richard Fotheringham shot well to Joe Granthams left but the keeper was already going that way and saved comfortably. The Lyons and Maloney combination worked again as this time the deftest of back headed flicks converted another long throw to make it 3-0.

Nantwich were by then trying to make the game a physical contest and in the 83rd minute the same linesman gave his third penalty decision of the game to Nantwich as he appeared to be the only one present that saw a shirt being pulled. Their man of the match Lee McAnulty was much more clinical with the kick. The home side thought they had made the game even closer when the ball bouncing around the FC area appeared to have crossed the line twice; however neither was to count as the linesman had flagged for offside before either could be considered. There was no further incident of note and the game ended with a 3-1 win to FC United.
