Colwyn keep United at bay

FC United were held to a one-all draw at Colwyn Bay on Saturday afternoon as a Phil Marsh opener was cancelled out in the second half by their Welsh hosts.

The home side stared the brightest and could have taken the lead inside the first minute, when Sam Ashton got behind a shot from the edge of the box. In fact the home side should have been ahead thanks to dangerous striker Holsgrove but he was thwarted by a smart save from Ashton.

It took 20 minutes for the Reds to get anything like a decent chance, Rob Nugent heading over an Adam Carden free-kick. Soon after, FC took the lead with a ball played over the top. The Bay keeper seemed to have it covered but his clearance was charged down by Marsh who controlled the ball and fired into the net despite the efforts of ex-FC United defender Danny Jarrett on the line.

The goal seemed to kick the reds into action with Jerome Wright having a shot over the top and Carden seeing a goal bound shot tipped wide by Jackson in the home goal. David Chadwick was the next see a decent chance saved by the keeper with a header after a great Carden run down the right wing. The half ended with Tunji Moses seeing a long-range shot well tipped over by Jackson as FC threatened to go into the break with a healthy lead.

The home side started the second half as they did the first but it was the Reds that had the first chance when sub Danny Williams fired wide when placed well. At the other end, Holsgrove had another shot well saved by the ever-dependable Ashton.

The game flared up on 70 minutes after a Nugent challenge. Once the ref had restored order, Ashton was called into action again with a superb tip over. The resultant corner was played in, the ball found its way to Holdsgrove who stabbed the ball home.

United could have snatched the win at the end of the game but for a remarkable triple save from substitute goalkeeper Sanna in the home goal. In the space of 30 seconds he kept out shots from Abdi Ibrahim, Simon Garner and Carden, with a goal-line clearance in there somewhere for good measure.

All in all, it was yet another good run out for FC United and manager Karl Marginson should have a better idea of his starting line up against Boston.
