Youth off to flying start

FC Youth 5, Rushden and Higham United 0

The almost all new youth team had a good run out against the Northamptonshire outfit who now play in the Rushden Town stadium. In a game that was played as three periods of thirty minutes, with rolling substitutions the entire squad were able to get some time on the pitch before the serious pre-season work gets underway with next week’s Umbro Cup

FC quickly took the lead as Roshcar Moussa picked up a ball forward and fired passed the keeper from outside the box in the second minute. The visitors had an early chance to equalise but could only hit the bar two minutes later. For the rest of the game FC had the best chances but failed to add to the score in the first period.

The second came shortly after the game restarted as Josh Burke powered in a free kick from 25 yards. Goals three and four followed in this period with two of the best moves of the game. James Green threaded a quality ball into the box from the left corner to give Jake Haslam an easy finish for number three and Lee Worswick smashed the fourth into the far corner as having put Liam Tate in against the keeper he pounced on the rebounding save.

The final goal saw central defender Andy Lee dash all the way up the pitch as the reds broke out of defence to fire past the keeper from close range at the second attempt in the 68th minute. Whilst that was the last of the scoring the lads continued to drive forward but with out success.

The Umbro Cup takes place between Wednesday and Saturday next week with FC United entering two teams, one in the Under 18’s competition, which given the way the age rules work, allows last season’s squad to sign off with the addition of Roshcar Moussa and goalkeeper Joe Grantham in a difficult group, which includes Altrincham and Stalybridge Celtic. The Under 16s squad will contain the rest of the players who will feature next season and are highly fancied for the title.
