Reds lose out to Ashton

An off-key FC United weren’t given a belated Christmas present as they went down 2-1 away to Ashton United on Saturday in front 1,561 supporters.

Tommy Turner’s second goal in as many games proved to be just a consolation as despite having the majority of the possession, United failed to convert their hard work into goals.

Ben Deegan headed the home side into the lead on 27 minutes after some sloppy defending from the Reds allowed an unchallenged cross from the left. Ashton closed United down well in the final third but the visitors were guilty of wasting chances. Chris Baguley came closest in the first half when his header glanced just wide.

United looked like they would get back in to the match in the second half but when Jerome Wright’s drive hit the post and Kyle Wilson headed the rebound straight into the keeper’s arms, it started to look like it might not be their day.

Callum Flanagan poked home Ashton’s second on 64 minutes against the run of play after some more sloppy defending and from there on it was always going to be a struggle.

The Reds rallied, as they always seem to do, but by the time they finally got the ball in the net it was too little, too late.
