United beaten by Bamber Bridge

FC United suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bamber Bridge, in one of their worst displays of the season so far.

The Reds were second best all afternoon against a physical and well organised Bamber Bridge side. United gifted the Brig a goal after 11 minutes. A cross from the right by Stephen Brown should have been easily caught by Sam Aston in goal but the Reds ’keeper dropped the ball straight in to the path of Brig’s leading scorer Ryan Salmon, who was never going to miss from close range.

In all fairness, United never really got going all afternoon, their brightest spell came just before half time. It had taken the Reds 35 minutes to make a distinguished move and just as you thought they’d found their stride it was interrupted with the half time interval.

Early in the second half the Brig effectively ended the game as a contest in the space of five minutes. First on 48 minutes, David Eaton making no mistake from 12-yards. Then a Stephen Brown free kick five minutes later was flicked home by Salmon for his second of the game.

United had no answer and it was Bamber Bridge who were looking most likely to score again. Salmon should have got his third when he arrived late at the far post but failed to finish Brown’s perfect cross.

The Reds best chance of the game fell to Chris Baguley on just short of the hour mark. Substitute Peter Thomson found Baguley just outside the 18-yard box. Baguley couldn’t have hit his shot any sweeter but it agonisingly hit the inside of the woodwork and bounced back to a Brig player.

United must pick themselves back up and discover some kind of consistency which has been lacking this season if they want to remain serious title contenders. Next up is Bradford Park Avenue at Gigg Lane on Saturday.
