Clitheroe match abandoned

FC United’s match against Clitheroe at Shawbridge on Tuesday night was abandoned due to floodlight failure little more than 10 minutes into the second half with the scores level at 1-1.

Rory Patterson had put the Reds in front in the 37th minute with a rasping shot into the roof of the net. Sloppy defending on the stroke of half-time allowed Clitheroe’s Craig Sargeson to snatch an equaliser.

All seemed set for the second half but after 57 minutes the ground was plunged into semi-darkness as the floodlights failed. The problem was reportedly caused by a fuse, nothing could be done to resolve the issue so the match was abandonded.

Failure of the lighting led to concerns for the safety of the 950 fans in the ground therefore once the referee confirmed that the game was abandonded the stewards advised supporters to leave. Fans attending an abandoned game in the past may have been issued with a ticket for any rearranged fixture, clearly that is not so easy at our level.

Clitheroe’s chairman was extremely apologetic and assured FC officials that he would make sure that the right thing was done by FC fans, either by making a donation to the Development Fund or subsidising gate prices should the match be rearranged. As yet it is unclear what will happen and the matter has been referred to the league for their ruling.

Tonight’s game was also the third and final game of Stuart Rudd’s three match suspension, a ruling on his eligibility for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Fleetwood will be sought from The FA and a further announcement made as soon as possible.
