United hold Harriers

Rory Patterson was on target as FC United earned a very respectable 1-1 draw away at Blue Square Premier side Kidderminster Harriers on Sunday in the third game of pre-season campaign.

The Reds fielded an unfamiliar line-up with Steve Spencer and Alex Mortimer filling in for David Chadwick and Rob Nugent at centre back whilst Stuart Rudd was missing due to sustaining a broken wrist in a domestic accident last week so Anthony Hargreaves again started up front alongside Patterson.

United started the more brightly of the two teams and it was Patterson who was the first to cause problems for Kidderminster keeper Scott Bevan as he forced the big shot-stopper to save with his feet after just six minutes.

And it was Patterson who deservedly broke the deadlock after 40 minutes when he picked up on an excellent through-ball before guiding the ball past the already committed Bevan.

However, within three minutes later the home side were level. An untidy piece of goalkeeping from Sam Ashton resulted in a defensive mix-up and the ball fell to Brian Smikle who gratefully rolled it into an empty net from close range.

Smikle impressed throughout and almost forced Mortimer to find the back of his own net with a dangerous cross just after the hour mark. But Margy’s men were clearly up for a battle and held their own against a side three divisions above them.

Harriers’ assistant manager Neil Howarth played in the latter stages and could have gabbed the decisive goal but crashed a powerful header wide of Ashton’s goal from a corner. Rhodri Giggs could easily have snatched the victory down at the other end in the closing minutes but Bevan got down superbly to deny the Welshman’s cheeky effort.

The match provided another good work out for United and they could come away with heads held high after a solid performance. The Reds are still unbeaten during the pre-season campaign and they will look to continue that run on Tuesday against Trafford which is followed by a trip to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
