Match Report
FC United crashed out of the Manchester Premier Cup on Tuesday evening, going down 2-1 to Mossley. Steve Torpey had pulled United level just after the break but the Reds conceded a second in the last ten minutes to seal their fate.

On a slightly strange evening, where usual defender Adam Jones was playing as our goalkeeper and Richard Battersby saw a first half red card for what looked like a two footed challenge, United never looked like the more dominant team and can have no complaints with the result.

The Reds started the game well enough, looking controlled in the centre of the park, and the best early chance came for Torpey, who cutting in from the left saw his effort from outside the box held by Mossley ‘keeper Martin Pearson.

United used the game to give some valuable match time to a few players who haven’t been regulars in the first team thus far and one such man, striker Ryan McGreevy had the next opportunity to put the Reds a goal up. Receiving the ball from Mike Norton at the edge of the box, McGreevy looked composed as his shot beat Pearson but he just dragged his effort wide of the post. Despite the stalemate, the opening stages were encouraging enough for the men in the red.

The home team were gifted a goal 20 minutes in, when defender James Brooks wrong footed himself trying to clear the ball in the area and ended up bringing down Harry Noon for a penalty. Noon stepped up to take the spot-kick and fired it high in the top left hand corner leaving Jones no chance to get to the ball.

Despite going a goal down, United looked composed enough and played some good football but once more looked like they lacked any creativity when the ball came to the final third. All too often, moves broke down when they reached that area of the pitch.

Only Battersby will know what was going through his mind as he flew in recklessly for a challenge on the stroke of half time. The red card for the usually cool minded utility player did look deserved.

United emerged from the break on the day that The Stone Roses announced their reunion and within minute Torpey had levelled the scores for United sparking hopes of resurrection from the men in red.

Norton had a great opportunity to confirm the second coming when he found himself with space in the box but his shot was saved al too easily by Pearson, who did well all evening when called upon, although his goalkeeping capabilities weren’t really tested by the United attacking line.

The hosts brought on Cameron Darkwah, a loanee from Stockport County, in the second half and twice Darkwah saw his efforts hit the post. The second time the ball bounced back off the woodwork, hit Jones on the back of the head and somehow managed to stop just before crossing the line for a goal.

With little over five minutes left Mossley regained the lead, as Noon kept his composure in the box to fire past Jones and give Mossley victory.

This seemed to spark United on and substitute Matthew Wolfenden was given a great opportunity by Norton, who laid the ball off to him outside the box but Wolfenden’s shot was just over Pearson’s bar.

Torpey then forced a save from Pearson but once more the shot was straight at the Mossley ‘keeper and after a scramble in the box a Norton shot seemed to be handled but United’s desperate penalty claims were waved away and they were instead awarded a corner.

From that corner, Jones ventured up looking to get United a late equaliser but that came to nothing and as United’s last attack of the game it signalled defeat in another cup competition for the Reds.

United must now dust themselves off for the visit to Frickley in the FA Carlsberg Trophy this coming Saturday, knowing they got the better of the Yorkshire outfit in the league only last week.

Website man of the match: Steve Torpey – looked the most dangerous United player in the final third, and his goal early in the second half brought United right back into things.
