Match Report
FC United lost 2-0 to landlords Bury at Gigg Lane in the final match of the inaugural Newsquest Cup on Wednesday night despite a spirited performance in front of 1,144 supporters.

The game didn’t start well for the Reds who found themselves a goal down after only five minutes. Bury midfielder Brian Barry-Murphy saw his free-kick hit the post and when the ball was played back across the area to Barry-Murphy he coolly slotted it away to give the home team the lead.

United took the blow on the chin and rather than surrender to their League Two opponents they actually got the ball on the floor and played some great pass and move football.

There were half chances too. Tunji Moses shot wide, Carl Lomax fired a hard shot just wide of the near post towards the end of the half, and there were a couple of decent free-kick attempts from Phil Marsh which just went over the bar.

United kept the momentum going early in the second half again playing the better football and frustrating the Bury defence into some hard tackles in order to keep the United attack at bay. At one point the United faithful were even shouting ‘olé’ to every pass made by the Red shirts.

However, the Shakers showed the ruthlessness of a professional team. A break in play for a substitution saw United’s concentration slip for a split second and that was all that was needed for Bury to double the lead when new signing Danny Carlton got a yard on David Chadwick and fired the ball past Ashton just after the hour mark.

United had a great chance to equalise only moments later when Lomax brought the ball down beautifully six yards out only to see the it taken from his feet by on rushing ‘keeper Cameron Belford.

Wholesale changes followed to allow both managers the opportunity to try out new players. Ashton and Chadwick were the only United players to play the full 90 minutes and possibly as a consequence of all the changes the Reds found it difficult to get any momentum going forward in the closing period of the game.

Ashton was called upon to make a good double save from the ever dangerous Carlton and the only chance to mention on United’s part was when substitute Danny Stott went close in stoppage time only to be denied by a strong hand at the near post of Belford.

The result meant Bury lifted the cup but manager Karl Marginson will take positives from the game, especially the way United applied themselves against opposition from the Football League. Despite the result, United showed another good performance which can only bode well for the forthcoming season.
