Match Report

Torrential rain couldn’t dampen FC United spirits on and off the pitch yesterday as the biggest crowd to ever assemble at the Abbey Stadium (stripping City of one of their few records) witnessed a comprehensive preformance from the league leaders. The fans stood firm and an almost 100% boycott of the first team fixture at Curzon Ashton due to a rearranged kick off time to accomodate TV coverage was achieved.

It was a big occassion for FC’s second string who for once didn’t freeze in front of their large vocal following and played some bright accomplished football despite the conditions. Club AZ started well in the first exchanges but FC soon got on top and wasted two excellent chances before Ant O Neill scrambled the ball home on the half hour. Danny Allen added to his recent goal haul 5 minutes later and United looked more than comfortable going in at half time.

The visitors emerged a bit hungrier and tested Tony Tompos a couple of times early in the second half but still FC created the bulk of chances. O Brian pulled one back on 66 minutes and ran to silence the home fans. However, seven minutes later Kyle Harrop had the last laugh as he drilled home from the right, scoring his seventh of the season and capping a great day for the club.

Good performances all round but Tony Tompos, Ben Blundell, Renee Mike, Craig Corneille, Warren Collier and Kyle Harrop excelled.
