Match Report

It probably comes as no great shock to those who’ve followed FC United Women, or the women’s game in general, over the past nine years that, although the team have shown themselves to be worthy competitors at their new level, they have some way to go to be able to match the top sides in the division. Not for the first time this season, the Reds found themselves on the receiving end of hefty punishment for defensive lapses. Leeds striker Laura Bartup was the tormentor-in-chief with a well-taken hat-trick.

Coming into their third game in eight days on the back of a dispiriting 0-3 reverse, FC were up against it almost from the start. Having already seen Lauren Davies block a shot from Leeds’ Sarah Danby, they fell behind in the 4th minute to a Bartup’s opener, neatly tucked away at the near post to a ball played in by Danby from the left.

FC looked to hit back with Abby Hunt putting a low ball into the goalmouth which Leeds’ keeper Wattam pawed away. Kate O’Gara then tried her luck from distance but Wattam was well placed to gather the shot.

Bartup almost scored a second but couldn’t quite make full contact with a header to Freibach’s ball into the area and the ball glanced wide across goal. However, soon afterwards, Bartup seized on a loose ball in the visitors’ half and raced clear to score, making it 2-0.

Chloe Ainsworth in the FC United goal was kept busy as regularly seems to be the case this season, blocking a shot from Leeds’ no. 11 Rebecca Hunt and then watching with relief as Bartup put the rebound wide, not quite being able to dig out a shot from under her own feet. Moment later the FC keeper managed to complete a save needing two grabs from a Hamill header.

Ainsworth pulled off probably the best save of the match, stretching to a Rebecca Hunt shot headed for the top right hand corner and just managing to turn it for a corner with her fingertips.

The Reds survived two more scares before the break as Freibach stole in on the right of the box to poke a shot wide across goal and again as Bartup chased a high ball downfield but was denied by Olivia Smith chasing back well to block her.

In the early minutes of the second half, Kaylea Cunliffe found Reds’ captain Kirsty Chambers in space to go through on the left side of the area but a ball across the goalmouth was allowed to run to safety untouched.

But goalkeeper Ainsworth was soon in action again. First of all blocking a shot from Kathryn Smith with her legs and then getting everything behind a long range drive from Danby. Not long afterwards, the Reds’ stopper was called upon to make a double save - firstly to turn aside a shot from Bartup on the left side of the area and then recovering to save a tight angled effort on the rebound from Freibach.

Chambers worked herself a shooting chance from the edge of the area which Wattam managed to grab, diving to her right. But the visitors’ goal was soon under siege again as Ainsworth saved another effort from Freibach, who then chased the rebound wide to whip a low ball from the left that also went untouched across the face of goal.

Bartup momentarily looked to have completed her hat-trick after racing away to put the ball in the net, only to be denied by an offside flag. Holly Davenport then went close with a long-range effort from wide on the right that Wattam was stretched to grab.

With fifteen minutes remaining, the result was put beyond reasonable doubt as Danby found a gap between FC United defenders to race through and score. Then, after a fleeting attempt to grab something from the game when Chambers’ shot-cross from the left grazed the top of the Leeds crossbar, the Reds went further behind as Bartup breezed through on the right side of the area to slot the ball past Ainsworth and complete a well deserved hat trick for 4-0. The scoring was completed as Danby added her second with a shot that went in off the underside of the crossbar.
