FCUMW put seven past Fleetwood Town to open league season with statement win
FC United Women kicked-off their 2018/19 league season with a 7-0 opening day win over Fleetwood Town Wrens. In-front of the 110 in attendance at Broadhurst Park, Jess Battle’s double either side of half-time, an own goal, strikes from Aimee O’Keeffe and Jess McCarrick and first FC goals for Hannah Dale and Corie Mather got newly-promoted United off to the perfect start, this afternoon.

The Reds got their 2018/19 league campaign underway surrounded by the grey overcast September skies at Broadhurst Park. It was a momentous day for the Reds, with it being their first competitive game inside the Broadhurst Park stadium, since it was announced that Luke Podmore’s side would make it their permanent home from the 2018/19 season onwards.

FC certainly showed their intention to make an impression in the early stages, coming firing out of the blocks and into an early lead. After good footwork from Kirsty Chambers, central to the goal, the ball fell to Jess Battle inside the box who swept home her first league goal of the season inside three minutes.

United’s good start didn’t end there, Corie Mather, on her first league appearance for the Reds, powered a shot wide before her second attempt was spilled by the keeper but collected before it could cross the line. Moments later, captain Kirsty Chambers drifted a strike over the bar after a driving run from the left wing.

It was then another league debutant, in Hannah Dale’s, turn to try and double the score, midway through the first half, on two occasions her curled strikes from the edge of the box went close to finding the net. The first forced the visiting goalkeeper into a brilliant tipped save before the second was wide of the far post.

On the half-hour mark it was captain Kirsty Chambers in the action again as she fired over after being found by an open Hannah Dale, out on the left. Luke Podmore’s side weren’t settling for the one-goal lead either, a good overlap and cross from Abbie Carrington out on the left nearly connected with the incoming Corie Mather, before Jess Battle’s goal-bound strike took a last ditch block to stop it doubling FC’s lead.

On 43 minutes United finally made the second breakthrough; a Fleetwood defender heading past her own goalkeeper after pressure from Jess Battle inside the box. That was to be all for the first half with FCUMW taking a two goal lead into the break, in their 2018/19 Premier Division opener.

FC started the second half as they finished the first; with plenty of attacking intent. Kirsty Chambers tried her luck from a free-kick, on the edge of the box that was deflected off target by the wall before the resulting corner was delivered by Chambers, finding the head of Abbie Carrington who forced a good save from the keeper.

United may not have been able to find the third of the afternoon on that occasion but they did just minutes later. Hannah Dale bending a free-kick into the bottom corner, from the edge of the box, to give her a first FC goal on her league debut for the club.

Just before the goal, the Reds made their first change of the afternoon with McCarrick replacing Carrington with Podmore making his second sub soon after with Sarah Chadwick entering the fray, as she replaced the captain, Kirsty Chambers.

Moments before going off, Chambers had volleyed well, meeting Cara Fields’ well-flighted pass on the run but the keeper was equal to it.

Earlier in the half it was Hannah Dale who got her first competitive goal for FC, on 69 minutes it was Corie Mather’s turn. The winger placed the ball past the goalkeeper, just moments after being moved over to the left, finishing the loose ball that had broke to her from Jess Battle’s blocked shot.

Fully in control, Podmore made his third and final change with O’Keefe on in place of Fields after 72 minutes and within five minutes she had her second goal in two games for the club. O’Keeffe expertly rounded the keeper before finishing into the empty net to score her second goal off the bench in a matter of weeks.

As the Broadhurst Park faithful continued to sing from the Main Stand, the Reds got their sixth. Jess Battle doubled up for the day, prodding past the keeper after being put through one-on-one by O’Keeffe. The latter was then provider again, moments later, either side of Battle striking the bar from close range, crossing for Jess McCarrick who headed home from inside the box.

That rounded off the perfect start to life in the NWWRL Premier Division for Luke Podmore’s side who next face Merseyrail Bootle LFC in the league, on Sunday 30th September. Before that, we go to Oughtibridge WMFC Ladies in the Second Qualifying Round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup next Sunday, with further details to be confirmed, this week.
