Match Report
Goalkeeper Adriano Basso saved a controversial penalty midway through the second half to secure a 0-0 draw for FC United against Worcester City at the Victoria Ground in Bromsgrove on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides hit a post in the first half with Jason Gilchrist denied by the woodwork for the Reds but the main incident in the match was Basso’s save from Steven Craig’s tame spot-kick with just under 20 minutes to go.

The Manchester visitors from were far from their best but will be reasonably pleased with a valuable point away from home. The result leaves the Reds in 12th position of the Vanarama National League North.

The game began in a rather timid fashion. It took to the 12th minute for some football to break out when a good move involving Nathan Lowe and captain Jerome Wright saw a cross just cut out by keeper Ethan Ross as Gilchrist waited to pounce.

The next action of note was on 34 minutes when the ball bounced to Chekaine Steele who fired a shot goal wards that was well saved by Basso. A minute later Steele had another chance but his shot clattered the post and was cleared by the visiting defence. Just before the break FC United hit the post themselves when Gilchrist smacked the upright.

The second half started in the same fashion with neither team taking control. The game burst into life around the 70 minute mark when the FC defence didn’t deal with the ball and it fell to Cieron Keane.

The Worcester forward moved towards goal and was upended by young centre-back Sam Baird. It seemed clear that the foul took place outside the box with the player falling into it. The referee Mr Jackson, despite being well placed, didn’t seem to know what to give and looked at his assistant, a full 40 yards away, for his advice. After glancing towards the touch line, the referee pointed to the spot.

The Reds will feel that justice was delivered as Craig saw his weak penalty saved by Basso. That was to be the last moment of note in the game.

Website man of the match - Sam Baird. Barely put a foot wrong and harshly conceded a penalty in another performance way ahead of his tender years.
