Salford banish the Outcasts at Goshen

A successful Community Cohesion match was played out this Saturday at Goshen Sports Centre. The 11-a-side fixture was contested by the Salford Welcome Group, a team of refugees from many countries based at Albert Park in Salford and the Outcasts, a team of young FC United Supporters. The Outcasts team included players from the Moses Community centre in Bury and the Barnardo’s North West Making it Work Project that train with Karl Marginson and other FC community coaches every week. The game was refereed by FC community coach Chuks Akuneto, with community coach Phil Schofield also helping out. Meanwhile a well-attended coaching session for FC juniors was held on the all-weather facilities at Goshen, for more information about junior coaching sessions please contact chrisb@fc-utd.co.uk.

FC United Outcasts 0-4 Salford Welcome Group

A strong and well organised Salford team put the Outcasts defence under heavy pressure from the outset. A series of last-ditch tackles and interceptions from the Outcasts central defence maintained parity for much of the half. However a good finish from a fine through ball by the Salford Centre forward saw them take the lead most of the way through the first half. The Outcasts nearly struck back immediately with an audacious 35 yard free-kick, however the Salford keeper was alert to the danger and palmed the shot over the top. Salford nearly took a 2-0 lead into the break with a strong shot on the stroke of half-time only to be denied by an excellent diving save from the Outcasts keeper. The Outcasts made several substitutions during half-time but this did nothing to change the flow of the game with Salford continuing to be well on top. In the second half Salford netted three further goals despite some further excellent tackling from the Outcasts back-line. The Outcasts did enjoy a couple of good opportunities to find the net in the second half but were left to rue the combination of some wasteful finishing and an in-form Salford keeper as the drew a blank for the game.
