Pre-season starts with defeat against five star Rhyl

Pre-season starts with defeat against five star RhylThe warm up for the 2016/2017 season didn’t get off to the best of starts as FC United went down 5-1 in sunny Rhyl on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds were put to the sword by the Welsh Premier League side who proved to be clinical in front of goal, taking most of their chances to run out clear and emphatic winners.

FC began well and looked good on the ball, going close early on but the Lillywhites went a goal up against the run of play when Andreas Alvarado coolly put the ball past Dave Carnell.

Despite being a goal down FC were on top for the rest of the first half, creating good chances with Harry Winter hitting the post being the pick of them and it was a struggle to see how the Reds went in a goal down at the break.

Manager Karl Marginson rang in the changes at the interval, changing nine players but United came out strong and Tom Greaves hit the post early in the second half.

But despite the positive signs of almost getting an equaliser, two quick goals from the hosts killed off the game. There was a brief glimmer of a comeback when Greaves made it 3-1 but United found it difficult to convert possession and chances into goals. The hosts, on the other hand, didn’t have that problem, scoring twice late on to make it 5-1 and give them an emphatic looking victory.

Despite the one sided nature of the result, there were still positives to find in the performance and on another day the result could have been completely different. The Reds now play West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC on Tuesday evening before travelling to Switzerland to play old friends FC Winterthur next weekend.
