North West Mental Health Football League 6-a-Side Tournament

On Thursday 22nd September, teams of mental health service users and
staff from Greater Manchester and other parts of the country took part
in a six-a-side tournament at the JJB Soccer Dome, near the Trafford
Centre.

The tournament was greatly enjoyed, with participants putting aside
mental health issues and having a good time together with other people.
There was also hard competition and high levels of skill shown by many
players. The final was contested by the It’s a Goal team from
Macclesfield Town and Manchester City A, with It’s a Goal running out
3-1 winners.

The event was organised by Grassroots Initiatives and the facilities
provided free for the day by Powerleague at the Soccer Dome. Tony
Nuttall, an FC United volunteer, and Matthew Wolfenden were on hand to
give support on behalf of FC United. Participants were invited to
attend FC’s game against Whitby on 28th September for free and Matty
Wolfenden made presentations at the end of the day.

FC United is aware of the benefits of promoting football for people with
mental health problems. Football can be a fantastic way of bringing
people together and involving them in social activity, as well as being
good exercise. There is a lot going on around this already in the
Manchester area, but we would welcome ideas about how FC could get more
involved and make a contribution. Please contact Tony Nuttall at
tonynuttall@blueyonder.co.uk if you would like to comment.
