Moston – Finding a Morsel for all Seasons

When more than a dozen North Manchester bakers and caterers were invited to produce a special Moston product for our fans, three adventurous establishments arrived in the Social Club at Gigg Lane on North Manchester Day. Their wares were very gratefully put to the taste by fans and here are the comments of the three FC judges, Club Nutritionist, Helen Walker, Carol Walker from M40 4FC and FC Board Member, Mike Sherrard. Agree or disagree? Tell us what you think.

The Only Moston Fruit Cake? from http://www.newmanscelebrationcakes.co.uk.

Newman’s described their Moston version of the Chorley Cake as "a subtle mix of currents, date and apples, flavoured with aromatic spices and blended with an authentic Moston Beer, supplied by the Boggart Hole Clough Brewery."

Carol: "My favourite was the Moston fruit cake - I think they named it after me."
Helen: "Very nice with a range of fruit and very filling (pardon the pun!). I know they worked worked to reduce the sugar and salt content so that’s a further plus for it."
Mike: "Different... a sort of bun/pancake, very soft on the inside with currants and lots of flavours. I think there was a little alcohol in there...hic."

Exotica Moston Pastels from http://www.maracuja.coop got Spicy with FC.

Maracuja’s Peggy Mulongo says: "We made the pastels using our stock made with African spices such as stokes and the pastry was a mix of cornflour, semolina flour and spices. We made a vegetarian pastel and a tuna pastel, but some of the tuna pastels we made extra spicy. To our surprise, even the kids loved the extra spicy ones, which disappeared in a few minutes, so we’ve learned a lesson. Get spicy with FC."

Carol: "They went down very well with my grandsons and their friends, and being children it was good for them to be enthusiastic about healthy options."
Helen: "They were nice - with unusual healthy tuna and vegetable fillings, it was good to know that they could be baked."
Mike: "Very tasty, I particularly liked the tuna and it was a bit spicier."

The Moston Rolled from Howarth’s Bakery 0161 681 1305

Proprietor Nick Cogger is also Life President of Moston Juniors and says: "Unlike most butchers, our Moston butcher uses 100% pork meat in his sausage roll meat, and that is what makes the difference in our rolls."

Carol: "Excellent and I am sure these would be a match day winner."
Mike: "Very tasty and a cut above the usual standard."
Helen: "I’m not a sausage roll fan..."

Meanwhile, £50 ended up in the Development Fund.....Not the final word from Helen: "I hope we get the opportunity to do this type of event again." So let us know if you want to be involved in a future FC Fans’ Bake Off to find the tastes for Moston. Feed-back to Helen Walker helenwalker@fc-utd.co.uk

The club wishes to thank Howarth’s Bakery, Maracuja and Newman’s of Radcliffe and to wish them and their products every success.
