Football Tournament in Moston
Four local teams contested the Eric Hobin Tournament at Manchester Creative and Media Academy in Charlestown on Sunday. The tournament was sponsored by Northwards Housing and organised by FC United of Manchester’s community team.
The tournament was aimed at 16-19 year olds who are organising their own football teams. The teams were AFC Moston Miners, Broadway Mad Dogs FC, Black Jacks FC and Manchester Boys FC.
The tournament was won by Manchester Boys FC who have been training with FC United coaches at the Manchester Academy in Moss Side for the last few months. The effect of the training told when they won all their group matches and then beat AFC Moston Miners in the final 4-1 with a fine display of flowing football made possible partly because of their superior fitness.
AFC Moston Miners, however, put in some good performances especially considering they only played their first match the previous weekend. Two students from Manchester College were their stand out players, Liam Faulkner and Alexis Salabanzi.
Black Jacks FC ran Moston Miners very close for second place. Alec Mudimu put in several skilful performances which you would expect from a player just taken on by Stalybridge Celtic. Eman Murage of Moston scored a great header to level the scores in the match with Manchester Boys that would have put Black Jacks into the final but the Moss Side team scored three quick goals towards the end of the match to maintain their unbeaten record.
Broadway Mad Dogs took the wooden spoon award but did themselves credit with some spirited performances. Frankie Croft from New Moston put in some outstanding individual performances for Braodway and he has now been accepted on the Football Academy at Hopwood Hall.
"None of the teams who played are playing affiliated football," explained Robin Pye, FC United’s Community Manager. "This tournament is all about giving young men an opportunity to organise themselves and hopefully they will maintain their involvement in football with all the health and social benefits that will bring."
The tournament came at the end of a long and productive summer for FC United of Manchester’s community team. Around 50 young men have been involved in a project which has seen them gain coaching qualifications and participate in football training and in leading sports training sessions organised in the Moston and Charlestown areas over the summer. Another 50 children have attended play schemes run by FC United coaches assisted by young volunteers in Moston and Newton Heath.
"The feedback we have had from the young people is that they are a lot fitter and have a lot more confident at the end of the summer than they were at the start," said Robin Pye. "We have met a lot of impressive young people during the course of this project and we wish them all the best for the future. No doubt, if the stadium project goes ahead, we will be working with many of them again."
