FCUMW manager Luke Podmore and defender Emily Marsh speak to FCUM Radio following semi-final win

FC United Women manager Luke Podmore hailed his team’s spirit to rally together and progress to a third successive Manchester FA Women’s Cup final, after beating West Didsbury & Chorlton 4-3 at the weekend.

The Reds were 3-1 up at half-time courtesy of a first-half double from Aimee O’Keeffe and an added time strike from Jess McCarrick but were pegged back to 3-3 midway through the second half. FC came out on top however, following a late Emily Marsh goal at Brookburn Road.

Match-winner Marsh joined Podmore as the pair spoke to FCUM Radio following the game. The FCUMW manager was delighted to see his side rewarded for fighting until the very end of the encounter.

“It was a really, really tough afternoon. I said to the players before the game that it was going to be a really scrappy one and the game was never really going to be over until the final whistle.

“I feel like we deserved it overall. The emotion at the end, that’s what it’s all about when you win games like that. Looking back on it, I probably wouldn’t change it, we’d want to win it in the same way.”

Podmore also credited the opposition’s performance on the day and insists that the Reds still have room for improvement.

“For us, it made for a great spectacle and a good game against our rivals and fair play to them, they really caused us some problems today.

“It highlights areas that we can go away and work on and it gives us a platform now to make sure that we don’t make those mistakes in the league.”

United advanced to the final off-the-back of Emily Marsh’s solo effort in the 86th minute of the game. The defender admits that the team spoke about exploiting the opposition’s consistent attempts to play the offside trap, in the dressing room at the interval.

“To be fair, Luke [Podmore] mentioned it at half-time about taking a big touch and going through because they’d been pushing up really high and catching us offside. So I just saw the opportunity and managed to take it thankfully!”
