FC United welcome AFC Telford United to Broadhurst Park - match preview

After opening the league campaign with a 3-3 draw at Chorley on Saturday, FC United welcome AFC Telford United to Broadhurst Park on Tuesday for the first home league game of the 2016/2017 season. Craig Phillips provides this preview...

With picking up a point in the first game Margy’s men will now be looking to follow that up and start off the home games with another good result, but in AFC Telford we welcome a team that we struggled against last season.

Despite finishing above Telford last season the Reds had a terrible record against Tuesday’s visitors. In the home league game, we went down 3-1 before losing an FA Trophy tie just weeks later 2-1. In February of last season, the Reds went down 5-1 to Telford to make it three losses in the season.

Even including three friendly games that we played against them in 2006, 2010 and 2014 ended in defeats meaning that the Reds have yet to register a victory, or even avoid defeat, in six meetings against them.

AFC Telford were formed in 2004 after Telford United were put into administration and liquidated with debts totalling over £4million. On the very day that Telford United were liquidated the Telford United Supporters Limited announced that the new club would be formed and AFC Telford were born along with the club motto of numquam obliviscere (never forget).

Originally placed in the Northern Premier League Division One the Bucks claimed promotion in the inaugural season, through a play-off victory over Kendal Town. By 2011 they had climbed back to the Conference but were relegated after two seasons, they immediately went back up in 2014 but came straight back down the following season and were part of the National League North for last season’s campaign.

Despite a difficult season last year, The Bucks avoided the drop by a point finishing in 18th place with 47 points, which was six less than our total last season. The Bucks opened this season against the much fancied AFC Fylde last Saturday and were narrowly beaten 1-0.

Last season’s performance was the clubs lowest league finish and points total at this level, although in 2010 they managed just four more points but earned a top half finish that season.

Current manager Rob Smith is in charge at the club for the second time, having been the manager between 2006 and 2010 when the team won the Northern Premier League and had finished 2nd and 4th in the Conference North.

Tuesday’s game is the usual 7.45pm kick off with full match details listed below. So, get yourself to that football ground and cheer the Reds on.
